About Me

Just so you have an idea of who's writing, I thought I'd give you some background.

I've been using the Internet since 1983 - yes, it existed back then. There was a group of 5 of us here in Austin who were interested in learning technologies, so we set up an email course. Naturally, we connected with accoustic couplers (those earmuffs for the telephone) at 300 baud (you can't even connect that slow any more!). After six weeks we proved that learning could occur at that speed via email - but it was faster to just get together for lunch.

Fast forward ten years. I was a consultant, working with Apple Computer when things really got hot online. At that point we were still typing IP addresses to get from one site to another. The only way you found out about a new site was to know someone who knew someone who had the IP address.

Then the explosion of the World Wide Web. By 1996 I was creating web pages and sites for many of my speaker friends. And I started teaching workshops for teachers who wanted to create websites for their schools. Picture this: there were no Internet connections in hotels at that time. Most of them hadn't even heard of the Internet. So I purchased a web server, bought 10 laptops (5 Macs and 5 PCs) and traveled the countryside, giving my workshops. I'd pull up to the hotel, unload and set up a total standalone web in the training room, then teach for 3 days (and nights!). Then break down the lab and go home for the weekend. Sure was a lot of fun!
